U.S.-Kuwait Trade Facts

Kuwait is currently our 50th largest goods trading partner with $8.1 billion in total (two way) goods trade during 2017. Goods exports totaled $5.1 billion; goods imports totaled $2.9 billion. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Kuwait was $2.2 billion in 2017.

According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. exports of goods to Kuwait supported an estimated 14 thousand jobs in 2015 (latest data available).

Exports

  • Kuwait was the United States' 40th largest goods export market in 2017.

  • U.S. goods exports to Kuwait in 2017 were $5.1 billion, up 56.0% ($1.8 billion) from 2016 and up 107.1% from 2007.  

  • The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2017 were: aircraft ($1.3 billion), vehicles ($757 million), electrical machinery ($622 million), machinery ($619 million), and arms and ammunition ($378 million).

  • U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Kuwait totaled $233 million in 2017. Leading domestic export categories include: vegetable oils (ex. soybean) ($41 million), beef & beef products ($25 million), tree nuts ($18 million), condiments & sauces ($18 million), and dairy products ($18 million).

Imports

  • Kuwait was the United States' 61st largest supplier of goods imports in 2017.

  • U.S. goods imports from Kuwait totaled $2.9 billion in 2017, down 11.4% ($376 million) from 2016, and down 29.0% from 2007.  

  • The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2017 were: mineral fuels ($2.7 billion), special other (returns) ($97 million), fertilizers ($78 million), miscellaneous chemical products ($8 million), and aluminum ($960 thousand).

  • U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Kuwait totaled $203 thousand in 2017. 

Trade Balance

  • The U.S. trade balance with Kuwait shifted from a goods trade deficit of $5 million in 2016 to a goods trade surplus of $2.2 billion in 2017.

Investment

  • U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Kuwait (stock) was $296 million in 2017, a 18.4% increase from 2016. There is no information on the distribution of U.S. FDI in Kuwait.

  • Kuwait's FDI in the United States (stock) was $1.1 billion in 2017, down 0.6% from 2016. Kuwait's direct investment in the U.S. is led by manufacturing, retail trade, and retail trade.
