Readout of Ambassador Katherine Tai's Meeting with Taiwan Minister-Without-Portfolio John Deng

BANGKOK – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with Taiwan’s Minister-Without-Portfolio John Deng under the auspices of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO). 

Ambassador Tai and Minister Deng discussed their work together in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and in other multilateral organizations, including the World Trade Organization.  Ambassador Tai and Minister Deng also noted the strength and durability of the economic relationship between the United States and Taiwan, which has been reinforced through discussions including the convening of the eleventh Trade and Investment Framework Agreement Council meeting in June 2021. 

Ambassador Tai and Minister Deng then discussed opportunities to deepen the economic relationship, advance mutual trade priorities based on shared values, and promote innovation and inclusive economic growth for their workers and businesses.  They emphasized the role of strong labor and environmental standards in promoting economic growth. They also discussed the importance of supply chain resilience and traceability and their shared commitment to combatting forced labor.  

Ambassador Tai and Minister Deng directed their teams to explore concrete ways to deepen the U.S.-Taiwan trade and investment relationship and to meet again in the coming weeks to discuss the path forward.
