Afghanistan

Afghanistan is currently our 95th largest goods trading partner with $956 million in total (two way) goods trade during 2017. Goods exports totaled $941 million; goods imports totaled $14 million. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $927 million in 2017.

According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. exports of goods to Afghanistan supported an estimated 2 thousand jobs in 2015 (latest data available).

Exports

Afghanistan was the United States' 79th largest goods export market in 2017.

U.S. goods exports to Afghanistan in 2017 were $941 million, up 3.1% ($29 million) from 2016 and up 90.1% from 2007. 

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2017 were: vehicles ($573 million), electrical machinery ($78 million), aircraft ($76 million), machinery ($74 million), and meat (poultry) ($27 million).

U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Afghanistan totaled $34 million in 2017. Leading domestic export categories include: poultry meat & prods. (ex. eggs) ($27 million), dairy products ($4 million), tree nuts ($527 thousand), beef & beef products ($130 thousand), and sugar, sweeteners, bev. bases ($97 thousand).

Imports

Afghanistan was the United States' 161st largest supplier of goods imports in 2017.

U.S. goods imports from Afghanistan totaled $14 million in 2017, down 57.2% ($19 million) from 2016, and down 80.6% from 2007. 

The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2017 were: carpets and other textile coverings ($4 million), special other (returns) ($3 million), edible fruit & nuts (currants,dried berries, apricots)  ($2 million), precious metal and stone (unworked, precious stones,emeralds, rubies) ($2 million), and special other (low value estimates) ($1 million).

U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Afghanistan totaled $2 million in 2017.

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $927 million in 2017, a 5.5% increase ($48 million) over 2016.

Investment

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Afghanistan (stock) was $19 million in 2017, a 5.6% increase from 2016. There is no information on the distribution of U.S. FDI in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's FDI in the United States (stock) was $2 million in 2017. There is no information on the distribution of Afghanistan FDI in the U.S.
