Afghanistan

Afghanistan is currently our 93rd largest goods trading partner with $947 million in total (two way) goods trade during 2016. Goods exports totaled $913 million; goods imports totaled $34 million. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $880 million in 2016.

According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. exports of goods to Afghanistan supported an estimated 2 thousand jobs in 2015 (latest data available).

Exports

Afghanistan was the United States' 77th largest goods export market in 2016.

U.S. goods exports to Afghanistan in 2016 were $913 million, up 91% ($435 million) from 2015 and up 119% from 2006. 

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2016 were: vehicles ($492 million), aircraft ($151 million), machinery ($68 million), electrical machinery ($64 million), and optical and medical instruments ($28 million).

U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Afghanistan totaled $27 million in 2016.

Imports

Afghanistan was the United States' 148th largest supplier of goods imports in 2016.

U.S. goods imports from Afghanistan totaled $34 million in 2016, up 43% ($10 million) from 2015, but down 26% from 2006. 

The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2016 were: special other (returns) ($16 million), precious metal and stone (precious, semi precious) ($7 million), carpets and other textile coverings ($5 million), edible fruit & nuts (other fruit, dried) ($1 million), and electrical machinery ($1 million).

U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Afghanistan totaled $2 million in 2016.

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $880 million in 2016, a 93.2% increase ($425 million) over 2015.

Investment

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Afghanistan (stock) was $3 million in 2015 (latest data available), unchanged from 2014. There is no information on the distribution of U.S. FDI in Afghanistan.
