Afghanistan

Afghanistan is currently our 91st largest goods trading partner with $1.3 billion in total (two way) goods trade during 2018. Goods exports totaled $1.2 billion; goods imports totaled $29 million. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $1.2 billion in 2018.

According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. exports of goods to Afghanistan supported an estimated 2 thousand jobs in 2015 (latest data available).

Exports

Afghanistan was the United States' 77th largest goods export market in 2018.

U.S. goods exports to Afghanistan in 2018 were $1.2 billion, up 30.2% ($285 million) from 2017 and up 154.7% from 2008. 

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2018 were: vehicles ($638 million), arms and ammunition ($145 million), electrical machinery ($110 million), aircraft ($100 million), and machinery ($70 million).

U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Afghanistan totaled $31 million in 2018. Leading domestic export categories include: poultry meat & prods. (ex. eggs) ($20 million), tree nuts ($7 million), dairy products ($2 million), cotton ($443 thousand), and prepared food ($143 thousand).

Imports

Afghanistan was the United States' 153rd largest supplier of goods imports in 2018.

U.S. goods imports from Afghanistan totaled $29 million in 2018, up 98.2% ($14 million) from 2017, but down 66.2% from 2008. 

The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2018 were: precious metal and stone (other stones, not strung) ($9 million), edible fruit & nuts (grapes) ($7 million), carpets and other textile coverings ($4 million), art and antiques ($3 million), and machinery ($2 million).

U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Afghanistan totaled $8 million in 2018.

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade surplus with Afghanistan was $1.2 billion in 2018, a 29.2% increase ($271 million) over 2017.

Investment

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Afghanistan (stock) was $18 million in 2018, a 5.3% decrease from 2017. There is no information on the distribution of U.S. FDI in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's FDI in the United States (stock) was $2 million in 2018, unchanged from 2017. There is no information on the distribution of Afghanistan FDI in the U.S.
