TOKYO – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai met today with Japan Minister for Foreign Affairs Hayashi Yoshimasa. The Ministers primarily discussed the status of IPEF and specific text-related issues, including tangible benefits for all members, going into the May round of negotiations in Singapore. The Ministers confirmed their intention to move ahead with an ambitious negotiating schedule for the remainder of 2023.
The Ministers also discussed the agenda for the 2023 APEC host year, particularly efforts on sustainable and inclusive trade. The Ministers also discussed priorities for Japan’s G7 presidency in 2023, including economic security.
The Ministers also briefly touched upon the recent signing and entry into force of the U.S.-Japan Critical Minerals Agreement, and several bilateral trade topics and issues of common interest under the U.S.-Japan Partnership on Trade.
