Readout of Ambassador Katherine Tai’s virtual meeting with World Trade Organization Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today spoke with World Trade Organization Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Ambassador Tai began the call by congratulating Director General Okonjo-Iweala on her historic appointment as the first woman of color to serve in the position. The Ambassador emphasized the Administration’s commitment to working with Director General Okonjo-Iweala to enhance the global response to COVID-19 and ensure widespread access to vaccines. They also discussed the upcoming 12th Ministerial Meeting and how WTO reform can meet the needs of Members. The two exchanged views on the future of trade and their shared commitment to economic empowerment through a worker-centered trade policy. The Ambassador and the Director-General committed to work closely together and have regular engagements.
