Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on Labor Day

September 05, 2022

“Labor Day is an opportunity to express our gratitude to our workers, unions, and labor rights advocates.

“Under President Biden’s leadership, the United States is investing in our workers and building the economy from the bottom up and the middle out.  This administration’s historic accomplishments – from the Inflation Reduction Act to the CHIPS and Science Act to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – will reduce costs for our workers and their families, create good-paying jobs, and help Americans compete and win in the 21st century global economy.

“Through our trade agenda, we are fighting for stronger labor standards.  We are encouraging a race to the top in the global trading system, including through our robust use of the Rapid Response Mechanism in the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement to ensure that workers’ rights are respected and that we raise regional standards.

“While Labor Day is an American holiday, it is essential that we advance the rights of all workers, no matter where they live.  We are committed to eradicating forced labor and preventing this malicious form of human exploitation.  Through the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act and the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force, of which USTR is a member, we are leveraging the resources of the federal government to aggressively monitor the prohibition of imported goods made wholly or partially with forced labor.  We will continue to call out forced labor in all of its forms as we stand up for the dignity of work for all people.

“I am proud to serve in the most pro-worker administration in history alongside a president who has always been a champion for the people who built this country.  The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to partner with workers and their unions as we create inclusive economic growth that reaches every community.”
