Statement from Ambassador Katherine Tai Commemorating Labor Day

September 06, 2021

WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today released the following statement to commemorate Labor Day:

“Today we thank America’s workers for their hard work and sacrifices, particularly in the face of this pandemic. They have remained resilient and persevered through unprecedented challenges over the last eighteen months. While wages are rising and the unemployment rate is falling, we know there is more we can do to support our workers, their families, and their communities.

“Over the last several months, I’ve traveled across the country – meeting with auto employees in Flint, farmers in La Crosse, machinists in Seattle and textile workers in Aurora – to get their ideas for how USTR’s trade agenda can work for them. We want to make sure their perspective is included in our work in order to create policies that raise wages, improve benefits, and create stronger workplace standards – including through the elimination of forced labor.

“Our trade agenda supports President Biden’s vision of an economy built from the bottom up and the middle out. The Build Back Better agenda, particularly the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, will create millions of good-paying jobs and ensure that the United States maintains its global competitive edge.

“On this Labor Day, we pledge to continue partnering with American workers as we craft a trade agenda that delivers economic prosperity to the people who built this country.”
