Michigan State Exports 

  • In 2013, Michigan goods exports were $58.7 billion, up 80 percent ($26.0) billion from 2009, and up 75 percent ($25.2 billion) from 2003 (according to the U.S. Dept of Commerce). Goods exports accounted for 13.6 percent of Michigan GDP in 2013.  Michigan was the 8th largest state exporter of goods in 2013.
  • In 2013, jobs supported by Michigan’s goods exports are estimated to be 289 thousand.   U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay an estimated 13 to 18 percent higher than the national average wage.

Manufacturing Exports and Jobs

  • Michigan’s manufacturing exports supported 30.7 percent of its total manufacturing employment in 2011 (latest year available).
  • Michigan's exports of manufactured products were up by 70.7 percent between 2003 and 2013 (from $32.1 billion in 2003 to $54.8 billion in 2013).
  • The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of Michigan's exports were: Transportation Equipment ($29.0 billion of exports in 2013), Machinery ($5.2 billion), Chemicals ($4.5 billion), Electronic Products ($3.1 billion), and Primary Metal Manufacturing ($2.5 billion). These 5 sectors accounted for 81 percent of the state's total manufacturing exports.

Agriculture Exports

  • Michigan is the country’s 18th largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $3.2 billion in agricultural exports abroad in 2012 (latest data available according to the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture).[1]  Michigan was the 13th largest exporter of soybeans ($669 million), the 11th largest exporter of corn ($251 million), the 8th largest exporter of dairy ($232 million), and the 5th largest exporter of sugar products ($201 million). These four categories accounted for 42 percent of Michigan’s agricultural exports in 2012. 

Export Markets

  • Michigan state exports of goods to the 20 existing FTA countries totaled $41.8 billion in 2013, 71% of Michigan’s total goods exports to the world. 
  • Canada is Michigan’s largest export market ($26.2 billion or 45% of Michigan’s total goods exports), followed by Mexico ($12.2 billion), China ($4.1 billion), Germany ($1.7 billion), and Japan ($1.4 billion).
  • In 2013, Michigan exported $48.3 billion to APEC, $5.3 billion to European Union, $8.2 billion to Asia, $2.3 billion to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), and $311 million to Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Small and Medium Sized Businesses

  • Over 13,500 Michigan small and medium sized businesses exported in 2012(latest data available), accounting for 89.6 percent of exporting businesses from Michigan and 19.9 percent of Michigan's exports by value.

Foreign Investment and Jobs

  • In 2011 (latest year available), foreign-controlled companies employed 177,500 Michigan workers. Major sources of foreign investment in Michigan in 2011 included Germany, Canada, Japan, and United Kingdom.
  • Foreign investment in Michigan was responsible for 5.3 percent of the state's total private-industry employment in 2011.

Major Metropolitan Areas Exports

  • In 2013, the following metropolitan areas in Michigan recorded goods exports: Detroit-Warren-Dearborn ($53.9 billion), Grand Rapids-Wyoming ($5.3 billion), Midland ($2.6 billion), Kalamazoo-Portage ($1.9 billion), Saginaw ($1.3 billion), Ann Arbor ($1.2 billion), Battle Creek ($1.0 billion), Lansing-East Lansing ($865 million), Monroe ($730 million), and Muskegon ($678 million).
