The Trans-Pacific Partnership Would Expand Market Access

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) offers tremendous opportunities for U.S. exporters.  TPP members comprise a population of roughly 800 million and these dynamic economies generate nearly 40 percent of global GDP. The United States already has strong trade and investment ties to this region; we exported $697.8 billion in goods to all TPP markets in 2013, or about 44 percent of total U.S. exports, and are seeking through TPP to further deepen our economic relations.

  • In 2017, Missouri exported a record $14.2 billion of Made-in-America goods to the world.  In 2016, exports from Missouri supported an estimated 85 thousand jobs.

  • In 2017, Missouri goods exports were $14.2 billion, an increase of 5 percent ($723 million) from its export level in 2007.

  • Missouri goods exports in 2016 (latest year available) supported an estimated 85 thousand jobs. Nationally, jobs supported by goods exports pay up to an estimated 18 percent above the national average.

  • In 2017, Missouri exported $13.0 billion of manufactured products.

  • Missouri exports of manufactured products supported an estimated 65 thousand jobs in 2016.

  • The state's largest manufacturing export category is transportation equipment, which accounted for $3.9 billion of Missouri's total goods exports in 2017.

  • Other top manufacturing exports are chemicals ($2.6 billion), food & kindred products ($1.3 billion), machinery, except electrical ($1.3 billion), and electrical equipment, appliances & components ($696 million).

Exports Sustain Thousands of Missouri Businesses many of which are SMEs

  • A total of 6,011 companies exported from Missouri locations in 2016 (latest year available). Of those, 5,104 (85 percent) were small and medium sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.

  •  Small and medium-sized firms generated 23.5 percent of Missouri's total exports of goods in 2015.

Missouri Depends on World Markets

  • The state’s largest market was Canada. Missouri exported $5.2 billion in goods to Canada in 2017, representing 36 percent of the state’s total goods exports.

  • Canada was followed by Mexico ($2.6 billion), China ($929 million), Belgium ($576 million), and Japan ($555 million).

International Investment Creates Jobs in Missouri

  • In 2015 (latest data available), foreign-controlled companies employed 110,000 Missouri workers. Major sources of foreign investment in Missouri included the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. 

  • Foreign investment in Missouri was responsible for 4.6 percent of the state's total private-industry employment in 2015.

Missouri’s Major Metropolitan Areas Benefit from Exporting

  • In 2016 (latest data available), the following metropolitan areas in Missouri recorded goods exports: St Louis ($8.3 billion), Kansas City ($6.7 billion), St Joseph ($904 million), Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers ($683 million), Springfield ($439 million), Joplin ($241 million), Columbia ($214 million), Jefferson City ($209 million), Cape Girardeau ($102 million).
