U.S.-China Trade and Economic Deal Draws Praise

WASHINGTON – Last week, President Trump delivered another win for the American people, safeguarding America’s economic and national security by reaching a trade and economic deal with President Xi Jinping of China. This historic agreement includes commitments from Beijing ranging from securing long-term purchases of U.S. soybeans and other agricultural exports to effectively eliminating China’s export controls on rare earths and other critical minerals.

The deal was quickly applauded by American farmers, industry leaders, and lawmakers:

American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall: Farm Bureau is encouraged by China’s commitment to import soybean and sorghum from the United States … Today’s three-year agreement comes within days of announced trade deals with Malaysia and Cambodia, along with frameworks with Thailand and Vietnam.

American Soybean Association President and Soybean Farmer Caleb Ragland: Today’s announcement is great news for American agriculture, and soybean farmers are extremely grateful to President Trump for making soybeans a priority in negotiations with China. This is a meaningful step forward to reestablishing a stable, long-term trading relationship that delivers results for farm families and future generations.

National Sorghum Producers CEO Tim Lust: The President’s meeting with President Xi, and sorghum being named, reflects sorghum’s importance to trade with China. Exports are vital to our industry, and today’s progress opens the door.

National Grain and Feed Association President and CEO Mike Seyfert: We thank President Trump for his efforts to reopen the Chinese market to U.S. agricultural exports. U.S. farmers and agriculture shippers depend on this key market. By engaging China and removing barriers to resuming exports to the region, the administration is reaffirming America’s role as a dependable supplier while advancing opportunities for U.S. farmers, agribusinesses, exporters, and the thousands of workers whose jobs depend on open global trade.

U.S. Meat Export Federation President and CEO Dan Halstrom: USMEF is encouraged by the progress being made in trade negotiations with China, and we appreciate the Trump administration’s emphasis on restoring market access for U.S. agricultural exports.
