Readout of Ambassador Tai’s Meeting with Japanese Trade Union Confederation (RENGO) President Yoshino Tomoko

TOKYO – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with RENGO President Yoshino Tomoko to share her vision for a worker-centered trade policy, and discuss how to cooperate with our closest allies and partners, including Japan, to promote strong internationally-recognized labor standards. 
 
Ambassador Tai shared with President Yoshino the importance she places on giving labor stakeholders a seat at the table on trade policy. Ambassador Tai expressed her commitment to consulting labor stakeholders when formulating the labor cooperation under the newly announced U.S.-Japan Partnership on Trade. The pair also discussed Prime Minister Kishida’s vision for a “New Capitalism” to address income inequality concerns.
 
Ambassador Tai and President Yoshino also noted the importance of international cooperation on workers’ rights, including the importance of promoting responsible business practices in global supply chains to eradicate the use of forced labor.
