Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on the Start of Pride Month

June 01, 2023

“Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the LGBTQI+ community and re-commit to the fight for the rights and dignity for all.  Our nation’s promise is that all are created equal, endowed with certain unalienable rights.  We have not always lived up to this promise and have more work to do to eradicate the prejudice, bigotry, and violence against our fellow citizens.

“Since day one, the Biden-Harris Administration has made historic progress in the march toward full equality, which includes prohibiting discrimination in the federal workforce on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.  This also includes encouraging efforts to protect Americans’ privacy and sensitive data from illegal exploitation.

“We have a collective duty to recognize the worth and advance the well-being of all human beings.  At USTR, we are studying how trade policy impacts all people, including historically underserved communities, to deliver inclusive economic prosperity.  This includes supporting efforts to strengthen the scope, availability, and quality of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data to ensure that trade policy is a positive, uplifting force for LGBTQI+ workers, consumers, and entrepreneurs.

“As we celebrate Pride Month, our Administration pledges to be an active ally in championing the rights of LGBTQI+ people in the United States and around the world.  This requires a whole-of-government effort to drive lasting change that makes a difference in the lives of real people.

This work demands persistent action from all of us to create a world where love knows no boundaries and people can live freely without fear.  We will continue this journey until all stand on equal footing.”
