Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on the Start of National Caribbean-American Heritage Month

June 01, 2023

“From a Founding Father to a sitting Supreme Court Justice to our current Vice President, generations of Caribbean Americans have been cornerstones of our nation’s story since its inception.  This month, we celebrate those whose contributions have strengthened our country and honor the rich diversity of the Caribbean American community.

“America’s strength has always been its diversity – the community of communities that collectively make up our national identity.  The same is true of Caribbean Americans, who represent different races and ethnicities and speak many languages.

“Our engagement with the Caribbean region is focused on addressing shared priorities and delivering inclusive economic prosperity.  Under President Biden and Vice President Harris’ leadership, we launched the United States-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030, which will improve access to development financing and new clean energy projects throughout the region. Through trade programs and agreements like the Caribbean Basin Initiative, the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement Act, and the Dominican Republic – Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), USTR and the Biden-Harris Administration will continue to stand with Caribbean nations to craft a more prosperous economic future.

“During National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we rededicate ourselves to deepening our trade relationship with the region and celebrating the rich contributions and history of the Caribbean American community.”
