Statement from Ambassador Katherine Tai on the 2023 APEC Trade Ministers Site Announcement

October 27, 2022

WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today released a statement following the announcement that the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) meeting will be held in Detroit, Michigan in May 2023.

“Detroit is a shining example of American innovation, ingenuity, and renewal, and it will be a superb venue for next year’s APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade meeting. We look forward to showcasing Motown’s resilience, rich culture, and history as a manufacturing hub built in close partnership with American workers as we continue to make history with our APEC partners.

“APEC is an important forum to strengthen and deepen our ties to the Asia-Pacific region. I am excited to bring my international counterparts together next year in this great American city and continue working to ensure that our policies unlock inclusive and sustainable economic prosperity for all of our citizens.”

Ambassador Tai will serve as the 2023 Chair of the APEC Trade Ministers meeting, which will bring together trade ministers from across APEC’s 21 member economies to advance new approaches for trade and economic cooperation.

In addition to the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade meeting, the U.S. Department of State today announced that Detroit will also be the site for the second APEC Senior Officials' Meetings in May 2023. The first and third Senior Officials' Meetings will be held in Palm Springs, California and Seattle, Washington in February 2023 and August 2023, respectively.

Official dates for all APEC meetings during the U.S. host year will be announced at a later time.
