WASHINGTON – United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Ambassador Tai and Director General Okonjo-Iweala reflected on the successful 12th ministerial conference in June, which saw the WTO reach consensus on a range of critical issues, including electronic commerce, harmful fisheries subsidies and the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ambassador Tai and Director General Okonjo-Iweala discussed the importance the next phase of the fisheries subsidies negotiations, to reach agreement on comprehensive disciplines. Ambassador Tai noted the importance of the long-standing moratorium on cross border duties on e-commerce. Ambassador Tai also expressed her commitment to promote institutional reforms that will strengthen the organization’s ability to deliver for American workers amidst significant global challenges.
