Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on the Start of Pride Month

June 01, 2022

“Pride Month is an opportunity to honor the history of the LGBTQI+ community and their fight for equality. Fifty-three years after Stonewall, we still have not fully realized a world free of violence and prejudice against LGBTQI+ people.

“President Biden and the entire Biden-Harris Administration are committed to ending discrimination, hate, and bigotry against our fellow citizens. It is why on his first day in office, President Biden signed executive orders to advance equity in policy and to prohibit discrimination in the federal workforce on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

“We must re-commit ourselves to breaking down barriers for LGBTQI+ people and show our allyship through meaningful action and change. At USTR, we are proud to do our part in advancing the labor, civil, and human rights of LGBTQI+ persons around the world. By studying the distributional effects of trade policy across all demographics and communities, we can support the Biden-Harris Administration’s work to create a more perfect, just, and equal union.”
