Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on the Start of National Caribbean American Heritage Month

June 01, 2022

“With its distinct cultures, languages, and people, the Caribbean American community has enriched our society and made the United States a stronger, more prosperous nation. Throughout this month, we celebrate the historic figures who broke barriers from the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court to artists, entrepreneurs, athletes, and academics that made indelible contributions to the country.

“As our third border, the Caribbean is an important neighbor. USTR is focused on enhancing this relationship through our many trade agreements and programs, including the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement (HOPE) Act, HOPE II, the Haiti Economic Lift Program (HELP), the regional Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA), Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), and the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement – also known as CAFTA-DR.

“In managing these important trade initiatives, our agency is committed to strengthening and deepening our trade relationship with the region, as well as celebrating the important contributions of the Caribbean American community.”
