Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on the Beginning of Pride Month

June 01, 2024

From Day One, the Biden-Harris Administration has been fighting for the rights and dignity of all peoples, irrespective of gender identity and sexual orientation. The LGBTQI+ community is a vibrant part of our nation, and we are standing together to achieve full equality and eradicate the prejudice, bigotry, and violence the community continues to face.

This includes launching the LGBTQI+ Community Safety Partnership to protect people from attacks on their rights and safety, starting a new federal initiative to end the crisis of homelessness among LGBTQI+ youth and adults, strengthening mental health resources for LGBTQI+ youth, and combating laws that target transgender children.

Full equality for all is also foundational to our trade agenda. This begins with gathering better data to understand how trade policy impacts all people, as workers, entrepreneurs, and consumers in a domestic and global marketplace. We are also supporting efforts to strengthen the scope, availability, and quality of sexual orientation and gender identity data to ensure that trade policy is informed by the potential impact on all people.

We know there is more work to do. From attacks on gender-affirming healthcare and rising levels of violence to book bans and classroom monitoring, the rights and liberties of the LGBTQI+ community have been at risk. As we celebrate Pride Month, USTR and our Administration reaffirm our commitment to stand with our LGBTQI+ communities—in the United States and around the world—to champion their rights, drive inclusive economic growth for all, and ensure equality and human dignity is afforded to every person regardless of who they love.
