Washington, DC - U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman announced today that Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Miriam Sapiro intends to step down from her position next month after four years of service. Ambassador Sapiro was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 24, 2009 and served as Acting U.S. Trade Representative pending the confirmation of Ambassador Froman.
“Ambassador Sapiro has served the Obama Administration during a time of unprecedented dynamism in U.S. trade policy and established an impressive record of achievement,” Ambassador Froman said. “She played a prominent role in launching the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union, implementing trade agreements with Panama and Colombia, strengthening U.S. economic engagement with a changing Middle East, and establishing permanent normal trade relations with Russia, among other key issues. On behalf of President Obama and the entire team at USTR, I want to thank her for her service and dedication.”
As Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Sapiro has overseen USTR’s activities in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Americas as well as USTR’s initiatives on services and investment, market access and industrial competitiveness, intellectual property and innovation, and labor. In addition, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and as a member of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
Ambassador Sapiro served previously with distinction at the State Department, as well as at the White House during the Clinton Administration. She is a graduate of Williams College and NYU Law School, and was a Rotary Fellow at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University.
