Statement of USTR Rob Portman regarding Senate passage of CAFTA-DR and House Ways and Means Approval

June 30, 2005

"I want to congratulate the Senate for approving CAFTA-DR by 54 to 45 with a strong bipartisan show of support. I particularly want to thank the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Grassley, for his successful stewardship.

"The benefits of CAFTA-DR are clear – expanded export opportunities for American farmers, workers and businesses, a level playing field, and the promotion of economic growth in our region.

"Every day, we’re making more and more progress. The House Ways and Means Committee gave CAFTA-DR a good shot in the arm today by approving the implementing legislation today 25 to 16.

"While the momentum for CAFTA-DR is clearly building, and we’re drawing more and more support from all sides, the debate will continue when the House returns after the July 4th recess. I look forward to working to build towards successful passage in July."
