Statement by Ambassador Katherine Tai on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

January 17, 2022

Today we honor an American whose selfless service and pursuit of justice and fairness made him one of our nation’s most heroic and important figures. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. recognized that the march towards equality is long, the path difficult, but the cause worthy and critical. And his fight for economic justice remains relevant and necessary to this day.

Dr. King once said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” The Biden-Harris Administration believes the answer lies in a whole-of-government approach to address systemic barriers in our society, build an economy that delivers prosperity to all Americans, and advance racial equity for all people.

On this day of service and reflection, we must continue to heed Dr. King’s principles and legacy as we emerge from a once-in-a-century pandemic and recommit ourselves to realizing the dream of equality and a more perfect and peaceful union for all.
