U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman completes visits to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Beijing, China

August 24, 2015

In Kuala Lumpur, Ambassador Froman co-chaired the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM)-USTR Consultation, and participated in the East Asian Summit (EAS) Economic Ministers Meeting and the U.S. - ASEAN Business Council Meeting.   At these meetings, he expressed the United States' commitment to a strong and unified ASEAN, and its support of ASEAN's ambitious initiative to complete the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) this year. Ambassador Froman met with several ASEAN Ministers bilaterally to discuss ways to deepen trade and investment ties between the United States and countries in the region.

On the margins of these meetings, Ambassador Froman met with several TPP partners, including Australia, Brunei, Malaysia, and New Zealand, to discuss the ongoing work and commitment to complete a high-standard TPP agreement as soon as possible.  At all of these meetings, he urged countries to work toward a successful WTO Ministerial Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in December 2015, including by ratifying the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement. In Beijing, Ambassador Froman met with his counterparts to discuss a range of long-term bilateral issues.
