USTR Ron Kirk in China to Participate in Strategic and Economic Dialogue

Beijing, China – United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk is in Beijing, China to participate in the second joint meeting of the United States-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED). During the dialogue Ambassador Kirk is focused on promoting mutually beneficial trade and investment between the United States and China, as well as raising trade policy concerns. Candid discussions in these meetings help advance a positive, comprehensive, and constructive relationship between the two countries.   

In addition to trade and investment, Ambassador Kirk will discuss steps forward to strengthen the global economic recovery. He will also engage with Chinese officials about building balanced and sustainable growth. 

Deputy United States Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis is also participating in the S&ED. Later this week in Beijing, he will join his counterpart from the U.S. Department of Commerce to lead a mid-term review of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT). 

The United States' relationship with China is one of the most important in the world. Ambassador Kirk is committed to making it more beneficial to the American companies and workers. China was the United States’ 3rd largest goods export market in 2009 having totaled $69.6 billion, these exports accounted for 6.6% of overall U.S. exports in 2009. Agricultural products and electrical machinery were the top two export categories, with agriculture being the 2nd largest U.S. export market.
