Remarks by Ambassador Froman on Liberia's Accession to the WTO

December 16, 2015
Nairobi, Kenya

*As Delivered*

"The United States is proud to be present as Liberia’s accession to the WTO is finalized.  There are strong historical and personal ties between our two countries, from the colors on our flags to the structures of our governments. The Liberian national motto, “The love of liberty brought us here,” echoes as strongly throughout American history as it does throughout Liberian history.  Common history and common aspirations give this occasion a special significance for us. As a friend and partner of Liberia, the United States congratulates Liberia on this achievement.

"President Johnson-Sirleaf declared the goal of completing these negotiations in time for approval here at the 10th Ministerial Conference.  I am delighted that my government has been able to play a small role in supporting Liberia in meeting that goal.  I would like to convey both my admiration and congratulations, specifically to both President Johnson-Sirleaf and her remarkable team, led by Minister of Trade and Industry, Axel Addy.

"Under their leadership, Liberia’s approach to the accession process was constructive and progressive.  Liberia has taken strong commitments to implement its WTO obligations on an accelerated basis.  Collectively, these commitments represent a big step forward. New laws, new institutions, and a strong commitment to using the WTO to foster economic and commercial reform make this accession an important milestone, both for Liberia and for the WTO itself.

"Today is the first day of what I hope will be Liberia’s long and productive participation in the WTO, adding another voice in Africa to this important forum. We applaud Liberia for this significant achievement and for all it has accomplished to get here. We look forward to working together with Liberia as a full member of the WTO.

"Thank you very much."
