Ambassador Schwab statement on Peruvian Legislature approving amendments to U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement

June 28, 2007

U.S. – Peru
Trade Promotion Agreement yesterday.  Through this action the Government of
Peru has formally adopted changes to the text of the agreement, including the
five core International Labor Organization rights made enforceable like other
provisions in the agreement – in addition to provisions on the environment, port
security, and others.

“This
historic action is consistent with the terms of the May 10 Bipartisan Trade
Agreement because it is a formal, legally binding amendment rather than a side
letter.  I look forward to working with the Congress on expeditious
enactment of the U.S. – Peru Trade Promotion
Agreement.”
