Statement by U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman on Department of Labor Report Regarding Worker Rights in Honduras

February 27, 2015

Washington, D.C. – “A touchstone of President Obama’s trade policy is that we must advance both our interests and our values in the global economy – and labor rights are at the forefront of that pursuit.

“Today’s report from the Department of Labor is the latest in a series of significant actions that underline this administration’s dedication to upholding labor rights around the world and leveling the playing field for American workers here at home.  From bringing the first-ever labor dispute under a trade agreement, against Guatemala, to working with Burma on a new labor rights initiative, to developing roadmaps to address serious workers’ rights concerns in Bangladesh and Swaziland, to seeking the highest-ever labor commitments in the Trans-Pacific Partnership to ensuring that trade promotion legislation includes strong and enforceable worker rights, the Obama Administration is taking unprecedented actions to promote and protect fundamental labor rights and ensure acceptable conditions of work.”

“I thank Secretary Perez and our colleagues at the Department of Labor for their efforts on behalf of workers here at home and abroad, and appreciate the Government of Honduras’s pledge to work closely with the United States in addressing these serious concerns.”
