United States, Ukraine Adopt Action Plan to Improve IP Protection

February 14, 2011

Washington, D.C. – The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Government of Ukraine’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade are pleased to announce Ukraine’s adoption of an Action Plan to improve the protection of intellectual property in Ukraine. The United States and Ukraine agreed to the Action Plan during the third meeting of the United States-Ukraine Trade and Investment Council, which was held in Kyiv, Ukraine in October 2010.

“I am pleased with the recent action taken by the Government of Ukraine to begin implementing the steps set forth in the Action Plan, which is now available on USTR’s and MEDT’s websites,” said U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk. “The enhanced protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights are a vital step toward improving Ukraine’s business and investment climate.”

“The Government of Ukraine will take measures to enforce decisions on the protection of intellectual property rights, as provided in the Action Plan approved during the third TICA meeting,” said Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Vasyl Marmazov.

The U.S. Government and the Government of Ukraine will continue to cooperate in the field of intellectual property protection, as well as in other areas under the Trade and Investment Cooperation Agreement, to improve the investment and business climate in Ukraine.

In 2010, U.S. -Ukraine bilateral trade exceeded $2 billion, increasing over 70 percent from 2009 bilateral trade.
