David Shark is the Deputy Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, a position he assumed in June 2000.

Mr. Shark has a broad range of experience at USTR. Before becoming Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Shark was Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources from 1995 to 2000. He also served from 1988 to 1995 as trade attaché in Geneva during the Uruguay Round with responsibility for negotiations on the WTO Agreement, investment and customs issues; anti-dumping; subsidies; government procurement and technical barriers to trade; import licensing; trade and environment; and trade and worker rights.

From 1985 to 1987, Mr. Shark served as executive director of the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences program, and director of international procurement policy in the Office of GATT Affairs from 1980 to 1985.

Before joining USTR in 1980, Mr. Shark was an international economist with the Commerce Department where he participated in the Tokyo Round of trade negotiations. He also worked on trade adjustment assistance for the Labor Department in the mid-1970s.
